Kali walked in her bag slung over her shoulder. She sat on a swing and sighed, what ever school she went to she was always on her own with no friends. She sat staring at the sky swinging

Melody's spare IPod headphone swung haphazardly from it's thin white cord, emitting the faint, almost inaudible sound of Third Eye Blind's 'Semi-Charmed Life'. The other was plugged firmly into Melody's ear, as she walked through the park, humming along quietly with to the tune.
She didn't come to the park all that often, but today was a rare exception; her mum was working on a new painting and had asked Melody to go get some leaves from the park for her work. melody didn't have a clue why she needed them - the picture had looked to her as though it was supposed to be of a girl dancing - but she had never been much of an artist herself, and had learnt from an early age that it was simply best just to keep her mouth shut where her mum's work was concerned.
She already had quite a few handfuls of leaves shoved into a 'Roxy' bag, and was deliberating as to whether she had collected enough to go home when she noticed a girl sitting alone on one of the swings.
Melody wasn't exactly social; she preferred to keep herself to herself and stick to hanging around with just a small group of friends. A few months ago it wouldn't even have entered her mind to go over and chat to the other girl; it simply wasn't in her nature. But that was a few months ago. Now, things were different. Besides, there's a first time for everything. Right?
"It's getting colder every day. Do you reckon it's going to snow over Christmas?" Melody asked amiably, strolling over to sit on the other swing.

Kali lifted her head sharply and looked at the girl and thought about what the girl had just said. She smiled and then thought of what to say back. She was a very thoughtfully person and had to think about what she said before she could speak to anyone.
"Oh hi," replied Kali deciding that the girl looked friendly enough and that she had to talk to some people in life. "Yeah it could i suppose as it is freezing...... i have over three layers on today," she laughed in spite of herself....she had never worn three layers but she was today.
"I was wondering you look about my age what year are you in?" she asked. She was getting more confident already. Ty would be so proud of me, she thought to herself, smiling. She sat a wondered what to say next, the realized she was thirsty so took out a big bottle of water from her rucksack.
She took a quick swig and then put the bottle back, and began to swig slightly.

"Very sensible. I wish I had though about that before I came out earlier. I didn't even have the sense to put on a coat." Melody laughed, looking down at her thin grey jacket. At least the rest of her was fairly well covered; she wore dark denim skinny jeans, tucked into black stretch boots (prehaps not the most sensible outfit to wear to the park but her converse all seemed to, yet again, have gone missing and she had had to leave in a rush).
Melody swung the rucksack full of leaves from her shoulder and leant back on the swing, causing it to begin rocking gently.
"I've just started year 11. What about you?"

"Same here," Kali replied, "Those boots are really cool where did you buy them?"
Kali looked down at her ugg boots. She looked back up again and smiled. "Anyhow, how long have you been coming here?" she asked.
She liked this girl, which meant good news and she usely new bad people from good people.

"Thanks. I got them in Faith, in First Purchase. they were on sale and I just had to have them: I'm a total shop-a-holic!" Melody laughed, "they're probably not the best of things to where to the park, but I wasn't thinking when I came out. I never do... think I mean.
"I've lived here in Carsontela since I was born, so i've been coming here pretty much all my life. Right now I've just finished collecting leaves for my crazy mum: she's an artist. She can go kinda ccrazy when she's really absorbed in a new picture and asks for the strangest things. But I've learnt that it's best not to ask questions and just let her get on with it!
"Sorry if I'm wrong, but I don't think I've seen you around here before. Have you just moved from out of town?"

"Faith has some of the best shoes ever, i love shoe shopping" Kali smiled
"and you're right in saying that, i just moved from a small place which is about a 2 hours drive from here, the rest of my family live up there. Your mum sounds cool mine used to love painting and then she got cancer, she is still alive but has never been the same really," Kali sighed but then smiled

"I love shoe shopping, bag shopping, clothes shopping and well, shopping for anything really!" Melody grinned and swung her feet a little, causing the swing to move.
"I'm sorry about your mum. That must be tough." Melody feel silents, thinking about what Kali had just said. She could still remember when Angel's dad had been told he had cancer. It had been hard on everyone, but especially Angel. He had been OK for a while after having radiotherapy, but once Angel died he had kind of given up and was become increasingly more ill again.
She sighed heavily and looked up at the sky, before blinking hard a few times. "You'll really like it here, I'm sure. Most people do." Changing the subject was one of Melody's best skills, and it was always very useful.
