A bell above the doorway tinkled as Melody stepped into September Breeze holding a fluorescent pink folder and a book entitled 'The Outsiders'. The book was blackened at the edges and the top corner of most of the pages was folded, bookmarking the various points where she had stopped reading. She had one of her trademark scarfs flung haphazardly round her neck, this one was filled with stripes of grass green and the kind of grey that hangs over the city when its about to rain.
Melody pushed her hair out of her eyes and approached the counter, "Hey, can a have a large tea please?" she asked, before putting £3.75 on the counter. She turned and walked to wards a table by the window, but suddenly came to a halt, staring at the table eyes wide, as though she had just seen a ghost.
Before she could stop them, images of two girls sitting at the same table, laughing and joking while doing their homework flooded into her mind, threatening to swallow her whole as she lost herself inside them. Melody shook her head, in a vain attempt to rid her mind of the images and turned, heading to a table over in the corner.
Was it just a trick of the light, or were the girl's eyes rimmed with tears as she sat down, placing the folder and book in front of her.
Her hands shook as she opened the folder; out of sadness or cold? Who could tell? She took out a small black notebook and pen and jotted a few words down before picking up her book and opening it to one of the marked pages with the corner folded down, and began to read while she waited for someone to bring her tea over.
